Jason Pielemeier, Deputy Director of Global Network Initiative, is responsible for helping shape GNI’s strategic direction, working with GNI’s diverse members to develop and articulate GNI’s policy positions, and engaging with policy makers and other stakeholders to enhance protections for free expression and privacy globally.
Prior to joining GNI, Jason was a Special Advisor at the U.S. Department of State, where he led the Internet Freedom, Business, and Human Rights section in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. In that role, Jason worked with colleagues across the U.S. government, counterparts in other governments, and stakeholders around the world to promote and protect human rights online.

Regulating (Dis)Content: How Human Rights Can Help Shape Government Content Regulation Efforts
In this session, representatives from a range of key stakeholders will come together to take a closer look at three important considerations for developing content regulation -- transparency, scope of application, and cross-border impacts -- and examine different approaches to each, in particular with respect to the implementation of the State duty to protect human rights in preventing possible infringements of the freedom of expression online.

The Opening Plenary of the Freedom Online Conference will focus on the current challenges and opportunities for achieving open and accessible internet for all. The Plenary will discuss the progress toward global connectivity, overcoming existing digital divides and growing digital authoritarianism, and the steps toward achieving open and accessible internet and human rights for all.
